Medical Laboratory Technology
The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) Program is a 2-year NAACLS# approved program providing clinical didactical education in the field. Upon graduation, the student will receive as Associate of Applied Science degree, as well as eligibility to take the American Society or equivalent examination from another certifying agency. This examination certifies the applicant as a registered Medical Laboratory Technician, MLT (ASCP).
The MLT program has set the following goals:
- to provide the medical community with competent and education medical laboratory technicians,
- to present state of the art medical laboratory to the student during training,
- to provide students with strong background in the laboratory sciences,
- to meet and exceed medical laboratory technology education standards,
- to assist the medical laboratory community with continuing education requirements and needs, as requested
Course of Study:
In the 2-year program, you will learn entry-level skills in Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Pathogenic Microbiology including Parasitology, Immunohematology, Serology, Coagulation, and Urinalysis. You are also taught phlebotomy techniques, quality control and assurance techniques, basic laboratory mathematics and statistics, laboratory instrumentation, safety and infection control. You will experience on the job training in several of the hospitals and medical centers in the area.
Advanced Placement for Registered Technologists/Technicians:
Register Medical Laboratory Technologists/Technicians may be granted college credit, which will apply toward completion of the AAS degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. Interested individuals that fall into this category should contact the Program Director for additional information. At least 15 semester hours must be completed at North Arkansas College in addition to the credit granted. The AAS degree will be awarded upon completion of the full curriculum as specific in the North Arkansas College catalog.
Prospect of Employment After Graduation and Certification:
Excellent. The job market is expected to expand nearly 25% by the year 2005*.
