Team Overview

Gogebic Community College enters this year National Tournament with an 18-13.  During the course of the season, they played three other teams currently in the national tournament: Bryant & Stratton, Highland Community College, and Illinois Central College.  With low numbers on their roster, GCC struggled at times during the course of the season with injuries and illness, but appear to be healthy at the right time.

They claimed a spot in the tournament by defeating Southeastern Community College of Nebraska last week 94-82 to win the District F Championship.  They were lead in scoring by their dynamic duo of Lori Wardynski (33 points) and Bailey Froberg (26 points).  The week before, they claimed the Region 13 Championship by defeating United Tribes Technical College by a score of 87-67, led by Lori Wardynski’s 48 point performance.

This is the Lady Samsons second trip ever to the NJCAA National Tournament and first since 1995.  For the season the Lady Samsons averaged 79.6 points per game led by sophomore Lori Wardynski, who also leads all NJCAA Division II players in scoring.  Freshman Bailey Froberg comes into the National Tournament seventh in the nation in scoring at 22.5 ppg.  The Lady Samsons also averaged 43.5 rebounds per game led by sophomore Alexis Engler with 9.3 reb/gm.

With those three players garnering most of the attention, their success is the result of a team-first attitude and contributions on both ends of the court by all players.
