To Receive Northark's Presidential Citation

Harrison superintendent of schools Dr. Charles Adair will receive the Presidential Citation during North Arkansas College's Commencement exercises and Bill Baker Amphitheatre Dedication Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m.

The Presidential Citation is given to an area educator who has made outstanding contributions to North Arkansas College.   Northark president Dr. Bill Baker will present the award to Adair.

A native of Harrison, Adair returned to his hometown in 1975 as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.  He is retiring this year after serving as Harrison's superintendent of schools for the past 13 years.

"Charles is one of Arkansas' outstanding educators," said Baker.  "We are especially proud of him because he was born and raised in Boone County.  He has been a friend and supporter for North Arkansas College since its inception."

One of the most recent projects that Baker and Adair have worked on together is the development of a technical center that will be located on Northark's North Campus.  Area high school students, including students from Harrison High School, will be able to attend the Northark Technical Center and earn dual credit in high school and college.

During Adair's tenure, USA Today recognized Harrison High School in 1991 as one of America's top public schools based academic achievement compared to expenditure per pupil.  He also was instrumental in establishing the "Adopt A School" program in 1990 and the Harrison Public Schools Foundation in 1998.  He was named Arkansas PTA Administrator of the Year in 1992, and was featured on the cover of Education Today and Teacher magazine in 1995.

Adair has a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Arkansas, a master's degree in secondary education from the University of Missouri, and a bachelor's degree with a major in biological science from the University of Arkansas.

A former president of the Harrison Chamber of Commerce, Adair has been active in community organizations.  Recently, he received the Chairman's Special Merit Award from the Harrison Chamber of Commerce at its 2001 banquet.  He and his wife, Jane, have two married daughters, Mary Beth Capehart and Karen Kordsmeier, and five grandchildren.
