HVAC-R

Air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanics install and service central air-conditioning systems and a variety of refrigeration equipment. Mechanics follow blueprints, design specifications, and manufacturers’ installation instructions to install motors, compressors, condensing units, evaporators, and other components. They connect this equipment to the duct work, refrigerant lines, and electrical power source. After making the connections, they charge the system with refrigerant and check it for proper operation.
Jobs for heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics are found throughout the country. The proportion of mechanics in the South is greater than the proportion of the general population. In addition to a longer cooling season, the South has had large increases in population and hence high levels of construction activity in recent years. Both factors increase opportunities for mechanics.
Starting salaries of most HVAC mechanics range between $18,000 and $24,000 per year depending upon job location and individual competence.
Students may complete a two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in General Technology by designing an individualized program of study. To fulfill degree requirements for the AAS degree, courses from two or more different technical disciplines along with general education requirements must be completed. The Chairman of the Technology Division assists students in preparing an individualized program of study.
Students taking the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning program will develop skills needed for entry-level technicians in this field. The program provides instruction in electrical wiring, fans, compressors, condensers, evaporators, electrical motors, pumps, mechanical and electronic control, and switching devices.
