Norfork students' artwork accepted for exhibitions

The Arkansas Arts Center recently announced winners of the 44th annual Young Arkansas Artists Exhibition. Now in its 44th year, the exhibition acknowledges the creative achievement of the youth of Arkansas. Approximately 12 artworks per grade level are on exhibit at Arkansas Arts Center through May 1.

Norfork Art Department had four entries accepted into the exhibition. The Arkansas Arts Center received 612 individual and group entries from 153 schools with 182 works selected — 10 from each grade level — by 75 members of the Arkansas Arts Educators Association.

In addition, four traveling shows were chosen from the exhibition. The curatorial staff at Arkansas Arts Center selected 65 works for the traveling exhibitions. Keela Erwin's artwork was selected the traveling show, and she was one of two in her grade level to receive an honorable mention.

The Young Arkansas Artists Traveling Exhibition provides statewide exposure for arts programs in Arkansas schools and is one of the most popular arts outreach programs. Thousands of students will see the artwork in the year to come. Ned Metcalf, director of state services, schedules bookings at schools throughout Arkansas. He can be reached at (800) 264-2787 or (501) 396-0350.

Norfork student's artwork is honored

MAGGIE ROTERMUND
Bulletin Staff Writer

NORFORK — It's the small successes in life that lead to the bigger ones.

Cari Campbell, a senior at Norfork High School, still remembers her first artistic success. She was in the third grade when she submitted a marker drawing in the Baxter County Fair art show. The picture of a rabbit in a meadow won first place in its division and whetted Campbell's artistic appetite.

Campbell continued to hone her talents and recently won the first-place award in the Thea Leopoulos 2005 Visual Arts Competition. She will receive $3,500 a year for each of her four years at the University of Central Arkansas.

The award will be officially presented at Norfork's graduation ceremony on May 20.

Campbell's winning drawing is a charcoal drawing entitled "Checkmate." The drawing depicts a hand pausing over a chess set.

According to Campbell, the process involved several steps. She asked a friend to pose over a chess set while she took photos from several different angles.

From the photos, Campbell chose a pose which she then used as a guideline for her charcoal drawing.

"People have been playing chess for ages," Campbell said of her subject. "I've had success with it in the past — I did another chess picture in seventh grade — so that got me started."

The competition was named in honor of Thea Leopoulos, a North Little Rock High School art student killed by a drunk driver in May 2001. Participants submitted entries that reflected the "spirit of Mother Teresa," the theme for this year's competition.

Of the top finishers, only Campbell and one other student strayed from actually putting Mother Teresa in the piece.

According to Noel Cole, Norfork art teacher, the competition required schools to submit CDs with one piece of artwork from each student. The judges then chose their top 10, and schools submitted the original art for further evaluation.

Cole termed Campbell as "easy to teach" and a joy to have in class.

"She is self-motivated," Cole said. "I give her the perimeters for a project and she goes to work."

Creativity is in her blood, according to Campbell. Her mother is "very arty and hands-on" and her father is an architect.

"I've been doodling all my life," she said. "It gets me by during class."

One class where she is encouraged to doodle is Cole's — she's taken art since the seventh grade and is now in the advanced Art 4 class.

"Cari is unique — in her style, in her personality and in her creativity," Cole said. "She's just a gem."

Cole said she wants students to experiment with different media while in her class, which allows students to create a varied portfolio.

"My favorite medium right now is black and white," Campbell said. "But I also like pencil, chalk and charcoal."

Campbell said in addition to studying art at UCA she would like to major in wildlife biology.

"They both interest me," she said. "Right now I'm just going to see where it takes me."

Campbell and other students' work can be accessed on the Internet at www.panthers.k12.ar.us. Click on either the high school or news button, then click on art department, then portfolio and choose a student.

Thumbnail shots of each students' portfolio are available for viewing.

Norfork team wins at quiz bowl tourney

NORFORK — The members of the Norfork Junior High School Quiz Bowl came in second place in their AA-regional tournament last Thursday.

The team now heads to the state competition on Feb. 19. The location of the tourney has not been announced.

According to teacher Kevin Bodenhamer, this is the third year Norfork has participated in the Quiz Bowl and the first year in the AA division.

The team played at Melbourne Thursday, winning all three of its morning rounds. After defeating Melbourne, Midland and Cave City, the team received a first-place seed for the afternoon rounds.

"We were very excited about that," Bodenhamer said. "That guaranteed us a place at state."

During the afternoon rounds, Norfork beat Cave City again before falling to Izard County Consolidated.

"It was very close right up until the end," Bodenhamer said.

Norfork also landed two students on the all-tournament team, Jordan Meinzer and Zach Harris. The other members of the six-person all-tourney team were from Calico Rock, Cave City, Izard County and Melbourne.

The Norfork team members are Meinzer, team captain; Harris, Josh Rogers, Wes Kittleson, Mitcheal Hargett and Rick Hazel.

The junior high squad is comprised of students in grades 7-9.
