James P. Owen

Owen to Speak Oct. 12 on “Cowboy Ethics”

In his thought-provoking, multi-media presentation, James P. Owen speaks from the heart about the vacuum in ethical leadership that has brought America to a point of crisis—and what we can do about it.  At a time when families are hurting, corporate America is on the ropes and our government is going broke, Jim tackles the unspoken question behind today’s headlines: What is the payoff for living with integrity?

Owen, founder and chief inspirational officer of the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership, will speak in the John Paul Hammerschmidt Lecture Series Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. in the L.E. “Gene” Durand Center at North Arkansas College.  JPH Lectures are open to the public free of charge.
In words, images and music, Owen captures the enduring relevance of the simple, core values our country was built upon. He shows how making integrity the cornerstone of our lives can not only enrich us personally and professionally, but can help us get America back on track.  With a message that speaks to all Americans, Owen leaves audiences inspired to think about their lives and our nation’s challenges in new and meaningful ways.

Following a highly successfulWall Street career that spanned 40 years, Owen launched a second career as a social entrepreneur focused on ways to strengthen the foundation of shared values in American society.  Inspired by his lifelong interest in Western history and lore, Owen coined the phrase “cowboy ethics” and wrote his best-selling book, Cowboy Ethics: What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West, distilling the Code of the West into “Ten Principles to Live By.”  He recently completed The Try, the third book in his Code of the West trilogy, which also includes Cowboy Values: Recapturing What America Once Stood For.

A partner with NWQ Investment Management Company in Los Angeles for 15 years, Owen is co-founder and chairman emeritus of the Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA).  Profiled in the Wall Street Journal as a leading Wall Street “rainmaker,” Jim has also been a prolific speaker and author on investment topics. His book credits include The Prudent Investor and The Prudent Investor’s Guide to Hedge Funds.

This will be the 22nd presentation in the JPH Lecture Series.  As a presenter in the series, Owen follows astronaut and cosmonaut Dr. Jerry Linenger, Sherpa mountain guide Jamling Tenzing Norgay, CIA officers Tony and Jonna Mendez, internationally syndicated columnist Gwynne Dyer, former North Vietnam prisoner of war Colonel Edward L. Hubbard, 1972 Olympic 800-meter-run champion Dave Wottle, FDNY Chief Richard "Pitch" Picciotto, Harrison native and music therapy specialist Dr. Frederick (Ted) Tims, Savant Syndrome expert Dr. Darold Treffert, retired Wal-Mart senior vice-chairman Don Soderquist, “Homeless to Harvard” heroine Liz Murray, Navy Commander (retired) Scott Waddle of the USS Greeneville, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette staff writer and Iraq war correspondent Amy Schlesing, animator/filmmaker Gary Goldman, former college and pro football great Keith Jackson, Clinton School of Public Service Dean James L. “Skip” Rutherford, Horns, Hogs, & Nixon Coming: Texas vs. Arkansas in Dixie’s Last Stand author Terry Frei, award-winning journalist Juan Williams of “Fox News Sunday” and PBS, pollster John Zogby, wilderness photographer Tim Ernst, and Ozarks historian Dr. Brooks Blevins.
