North Arkansas College of the University of Arkansas (UA Northark) has shattered its all-time enrollment record, welcoming 2,903 students this fall, a remarkable 32% increase over last year and the largest enrollment in the institution’s history. The previous enrollment record of 2,429 students was set in the fall of 2009.
The historic growth reflects the momentum created through its integration into the University of Arkansas System. Since becoming UA Northark last April, the college has benefited from greater visibility, expanded partnerships, new academic pathways, and increased opportunities to connect students with programs across the UA System. The affiliation has strengthened UA Northark’s ability to serve students close to home while providing clearer pathways to bachelor’s degrees and beyond.
“This is about much more than a name change,” said Chancellor Rick Massengale. “Our affiliation with the University of Arkansas System has opened doors, expanded opportunities, and strengthened our ability to serve students and our communities. This record enrollment is an indication that students are recognizing the value of what UA Northark offers and the opportunities available to them through the UA System. It is exciting to know we are helping students of all ages achieve their dream of obtaining a superior education while giving them the opportunity to have a better quality of life through our partnership with the UA System.”
One of the most significant drivers of UA Northark’s record enrollment is the tremendous growth of its concurrent enrollment program. Concurrent students account for 53% of the institution’s total student population, up a whopping 66% over last fall, demonstrating the growing demand among high school students and families for an affordable head start on college.
At the heart of UA Northark’s mission is a commitment to making education accessible, affordable, and attainable for everyone. By partnering with the high schools, UA Northark has found a pathway into higher education that helps students take classes where they are and often from teachers they know personally.
UA Northark’s concurrent program serves students from 34 high schools, two online programs and homeschool students. The college is extending its reach well beyond its traditional service area and bringing college-level opportunities to students throughout the state. Through concurrent enrollment, high school students can earn college credit while completing their high school education, giving them a valuable head start toward a degree or credential while helping reduce the overall cost of higher education.
The Northark Technical Center is bursting with 180 high school students. Thanks to a generous community donation, students receive free lunches each day, allowing them to focus on their education.
The college’s revitalized CDL program is also gaining momentum, fueled by the recent donation of two tractors and two 48-foot trailers from FedEx Freight. Workforce opportunities continue to grow, with three new artificial intelligence classes and a new drone course expanding the skills available to students preparing for today’s rapidly changing workforce.
