Changes to Federal Direct Student Loan

The 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act makes numerous changes to the Higher Education Act of 1965.  Beginning with the 2026/2027 Academic Year, there will be changes to how Federal Direct Student Loans will be processed.

Changing:

  • Loan amounts will be prorated based on the number of hours a student is enrolled in at the time of disbursement

  • Subsequent term disbursements will be evaluated and reduced (if necessary) based on the total number of credit hours for the academic year.  This means that spring loan disbursements could be reduced if a student drops courses in the fall semester.

  • Aggregate (lifetime) Loan Limits can no longer be paid down to borrow more loan funds.

No change:

  • Students must still be enrolled in at least six credit hours

  • Students must still be enrolled in a degree seeking program

  • Annual loan limits remain at

o   Subsidized

* Freshman $3500, Sophomore $4500

o   Unsubsidized

* Dependent $2000, Independent $6000
